Over the past several years review journals have increasingly used
stars and other indications to call attention to books and media of
exceptional quality, interest, or potential use. A few journals even
pull out these reviews placing them in a prominent place. When a
book, CD, audiobook, video, or web site has received a starred
review and has been selected for inclusion in one or more of the
Core Collections, this is indicated in the entry.
How can you use this information?
 |
A significant number
of starred reviews (3 or 4 and above) awarded to a title
indicates a consensus of opinion on a title. The Core
Collections are searchable by the number of starred reviews. A
few books have received 8 starred reviews. |
 |
Coupled with best
lists, starred reviews can be used as support when a title is
challenged. |
 |
These two
indications are also useful in arriving at decisions when
weeding. |
 |
Using the Core
Collection Dewey or subject search option with starred reviews
is very helpful in collection development. |
