Twilight of the Paperboy (and Papergirl)?
The News and Its Future
A new book in the Reference Shelf series
The Reference Shelf Vol. 82, No. 02
Edited by Paul McCaffrey
ISBN 978-0-8242-1097-7

We all love the Internet. Whether it’s shopping for taxidermy at 3 a.m., catching up on the latest doings of the Octomom, or reading back issues of THE CORE, the World Wide Web has made so much available to us through just the click of a mouse. Not only do we have up-to-the-second access to the latest news and information, we can now connect with friends, join in on-line chats, start our own Web logs, and otherwise transmit our thoughts, images, videos, and unhinged rants throughout the globe, all without leaving the house. What is more, on cable television we have countless hours of entertainment, the wonders of reality tv, and guilty pleasures of all kinds.
Much as we can’t imagine modern life without cable television or the Internet, however, we also know that their influence can be both creative and destructive. In fact, they have built whole industries and leveled others, all while transforming how we experience the larger world. Few sectors have felt the full brunt of their impact more keenly than the traditional news media.
Which brings us to paperboys, papergirls, and the latest volume in The Reference Shelf series, The News and Its Future. In the pre-Internet days, we got most of our news from the local newspaper, which, for a fee, tended to be hurled at our house at an unreasonably early hour by a kid on a bicycle. These days, we no longer have a use for that fee, the kid, the bicycle, or the newspaper itself. Now we just read it on-line for free, checking in at various times throughout the day. And we don’t just access material from the local paper either, but from any number of publications and blogs, both at home and overseas.
For our television news, back in the day, we tuned to one of the three major networks at 6:30 p.m., where a calm anchorperson filled us in on the major stories of the day. And while the network news remains an institution, now we can at any hour flip to the cable news channels—CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, or their affiliates—where we’ll see those major stories on an endless loop, or filtered through an often-angry and bellicose commentator, or better yet through the multiple shouting heads of an expert panel.
The twenty-five articles presented in The News and Its Future describe the changes wrought by the Internet and cable news and examine what their underlying import is for journalism and for the public. The major trend the book identifies and explores is the democratization of the news. What democratization means is that the line between the public and the press is disappearing. Everybody is a journalist now and can pick up a camera and cover the news, interpret it, and, thanks to the Internet, send their material out to a wider audience.
It can be a messy process, as those of us in the print media know, tough on news anchors, newspaper companies, paid journalists, and paperboys and papergirls. Still the pace of change is exhilarating. As the New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman has pointed out, we are living in a time not unlike that when Gutenberg invented the printing press. The News and Its Future takes a close look at the revolution transforming journalism and what the years ahead are likely to bring.

The Great Dane Speaks
“and the winners are . . .”
April 2, Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday, is celebrated as International Children’s Book Day.
The 2010 Hans Christian Andersen Award, the most prestigious international award for children’s books, has been given to British author David Almond and German illustrator Jutta Bauer.
The Hans Christian Andersen Awards are presented every two years by IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) to an author and an illustrator whose complete works have made an important and lasting contribution to children’s literature.
According to the award citation, the jury recognized David Almond’s “unique voice of a creator of magic realism for children. His use of language is sophisticated and reaches across the ages.” Bauer was praised for “her philosophical approach, originality, creativity as well as her ability to communicate with young readers.”
http://www.ibby.org/index.php?id=1019
Both of these outstanding contributors to literature for children are represented by numerous titles in the Children’s Core Collection and Middle and Junior High Core Collection.

THE BOOKS THE STARS FELL ON
The West Point Class of 1915 was known as the class the stars fell on. When World War II broke out, they had advanced through the officer ranks and were catapulted forward as generals. Fifty-nine percent of the 164 graduates attained the rank of general.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_class_the_stars_fell_on
Much like the Class’ of ’15, there are books that seem to attract stars, some for their outstanding quality, and others for their timeliness. The Editors of the Core Collections pay attention to starred reviews. Most of the books receiving a starred review are added to the Collections, some as supplementary titles available on WilsonWeb only. For a list of the periodicals and Web sites we monitor refer to http://www.corecollections.net/starred_reviews.htm.
This month we add a new feature to The Core, our newsletter, alerting you to the books that received the largess of reviewers during February. Next month we will report on starred reviews awarded between March 1st and April 15th.
In February 113 books published for children and/or young adults received a star from one or more reviewer. Two hundred and seventy-seven books published for adults were awarded a star in February. Below you will find those that so far received four or more stars. Some of these books are likely to receive even more starred reviews in the months ahead.

SCHOOL-LIBRARIES.NET:
April 2010 Report
School-Libraries.net is the world’s directory of
school library home pages.
March was another good month for School-Libraries.net. We added thirty-four new school libraries to the database. Check out the new libraries at:
http://www.corecollections.net/SL/new.htm
So far this year 168 libraries have been added. We are well on our way to meeting our goal of 300 new libraries. If your library is not included, please become a part of the world’s largest directory of school library Web sites. http://www.standardcatalogs.com/forms/contact.htm
And this month we added another new country, Indonesia.
We also added a new state coordinator:
ARIZONA
Kerrlita Westrick, L. Thomas Heck Middle School, Litchfield Park, Arizona
kerrlita@cox.net
We still have many states needing a coordinator. If you are interested contact
rbarber@hwwilson.com
Please continue to let us know about dead links by using our report dead links form http://www.corecollections.net/forms/deadlinks/deadlinks.htm
Each month we award a star to one or more library Web sites that we feel are outstanding.
Web Site of the Month

This month we give a star to:
Escobedo (Nevada) Middle School Library http://escoweb.org/blogs/bacalibrary/
for the general layout and for the variety of information included. We also were impressed by their program to collect canned food for local food cupboards. We hope this effort becomes a model for other schools.
Naples (Florida) High School Library Media Center http://collier.k12.fl.us/nhs/lmc/
for its neat, informative Web site design but especially for its SOAR Seen Outside Reading program.
Evergreen (Washington) Middle School Library http://cms.everett.k12.wa.us/evergreen/library/
a spare, beautiful Web site with a well-organized list of resources.
Congratulations to all.
Imitation is said to be the highest form of praise. If so, then we have arrived. An academic librarian has recently contacted us for advice on starting a similar site for college and university libraries. He is considering providing links to instructional aids prepared by librarians to assist students in using library resources. This will be of interest to many high school librarians as well, who may want to link to these instructional aids.
Final thoughts: we have noticed a number of library sites have sections for parents. Some have friends’ groups, and others book discussion groups for parents or for parents and teens together. During these days of budget stress, it is important to cultivate every potential group of supporters.

The Children’s Core Collection
Committee Come to New York
Each of the Wilson Core Collections has a committee of advisors, librarians from around the country, who give the editors advice on matters large and small—everything from where in the world are we and what do we think we’re doing, down to the worthiness of individual titles.
Each of the Core Collections is published as a print volume every four years, and in preparation for that “print event”—and there will be a new (20th) edition of Children’s Core Collection this year—we bring the committee to New York for a day of brainstorming. The Children’s Committee met in a Midtown hotel on February 12th, and here we are having lunch, with a commanding view of Manhattan and the East River out the window.
